It was a tight race to see which side of our building would get the bragging rights for Food Drive Champion! The Student Leadership team led a food drive battle to raise funds for the Addieville UCC Food Pantry. Okawville Grade School competed against Okawville Jr./Sr. High School to see which side of the building would raise the most money for this great cause! Each side battled from September 11th through September 14th. At the end of the week, the whole school brought in an astonishing total of $1,195.30 for the food pantry!
The senior class rounded up the most money for the junior/senior high school side, in part by cleaning out their cars for coins on the last day. This gave them a winning lead with over $208 raised! Mrs. Rossel’s 4th-grade class brought in the most money for the grade school side. The class brought in over $180 to support their community! Both sides battled all week and the lead was ever-changing as the race continued and the students were locked in a tight contest.
I asked Mr. Rakers about his thoughts on the food drive, he said, ”I feel very fortunate to never have to wonder where my next meal is going to come from, I feel very fortunate for everything I have.” Mr. Rakers also said, “It was a very worthy cause for the food pantry.” I also asked Mr. Rakers what he would have changed about the food drive, he said,” The only thing I would change is to have a goal for every class, like a number they should have a goal to raise. It was a wonderful competition and I’m glad it benefits locals and those within the community.”
