Two groups from Okawville High School volunteered at the Special Olympics this past Sunday, October 22, 2023. OHS’s Student Leadership team, sponsored by Mrs. Schleifer and Mrs. Holm, and the National Honor Society, led by Mrs. Schliefer, donated their time this weekend to allow people with special needs to participate in bowling on a competitive level. Their sectional competition took place that day at St. Clair Bowl. These athletes were competing to earn a place in the state competition held in Peoria, IL.
The majority of volunteers were from Okawville High School. Without these student volunteers, this event would not have been possible. The students were happy to have been able to help. One volunteer, Mallory Bening, said, “This experience was very rewarding. I loved seeing the look on the people’s faces when they did well or got a strike.”
OHS not only helps with Special Olympics bowling each year but they also host Special Olympics basketball in the winter at the high school. The volunteers and athletes are really involved in the event, and it is a highlight of their year.
