On October 12, motivational speaker John Foppe inspired all the students and teachers gathered in the Orena with his story. Mr. Foppe was born with no arms. This has caused him to have many struggles in doing simple, day-to-day tasks. He had 6 other brothers to help him, so he took advantage of that when he was younger. “I created a disability,” he emphasized. Luckily for him, he had a very loving family. His mother realized that he needed to learn to do things for himself. His family decided to use the tactic of tough love to help John learn to do things for himself. They made him figure out how to put on a pair of pants by himself, refusing to help him. John was finally able to slip into a pair of sweatpants that day, but as he got older, he was able to conquer many other things, such as driving a car and going to college. He even sat in his chair and poured himself a drink at the assembly with his feet, surprising everyone. He ended up becoming a public speaker and has traveled all over the world. He also has written a book called, “What’s Your Excuse?” His visit to Okawville Jr./Sr. High has left many students inspired. Thank you for visiting Okawville Mr. Foppe!
