On Friday, November 3, 2023, the sophomore class went on a field trip to Kaskaskia College, with the exception of the students who attended the FFA State Convention or cross country. This field trip was to help the students decide what careers they are interested in and not interested in. They got to choose which careers they wanted to learn about. The sophomores attended four sessions in the morning, where they listened to speakers that talked about their career interests. After the four sessions, they ate lunch. The last thing they did was a hands-on simulation session of their choice.
Mr. Rakers, the high school principal, attended this field trip with the sophomores. He said, “If students went to KC looking to learn about careers, they learned a lot. They learned the positives and negatives of careers that interest them. We hope that students begin to narrow their focus after this experience. At a minimum, students can begin eliminating certain career fields. While we know it’s still early, it’s never too early to begin thinking about careers.” This is an important field trip for our students at OHS as it is an important part of our PACE Framework, which is our West Washington Unit #10 plan to engage students in career focus and development. We will definitely continue to attend the KC career fair.
