On Monday, April 22 the junior high golfers played in the match they have been practicing for this whole season: the regionals tournament! There were 15 schools and 79 kids, 27 girls, and 53 boys, competing that day. The towns that competed were Okawville, Nashville, Nashville TSJ, Aviston, All Saints, Germantown, Breese, Highland, Oakdale, Sparta, Marissa, Albers/Damiansville, Steeleville, Steeleville St. Marks, and Bartelso. All the kids started at 9:00 A.M. The girls were on the front nine and the boys were on the back nine. After many hours of playing and waiting, it was time to announce the people going to state. 7th-grade golfer Delaney Viehl placed 1st in the top 5, scoring a 45, and 8th-grade golfer Teren Schwankhaus placed 6th in the top 11, scoring a 40. 7th-grade golfer Delany Veil said, “When I heard my name called I was surprised, excited, and happy all at the same time. I had so much fun playing and it was one of the best rounds of golf I ever played and I’m so excited to play in state. I couldn’t believe I beat my personal record, I was flattered because I thought I didn’t do that well but I was wrong.” Thanks to Jon Kraus and the many others who helped out through that fun and amazing day and good luck to the qualifiers headed to state!
