On November 1, the sophomores at Okawville High School are heading to Kaskaskia College for a career field day. The class of 2027 is growing up fast, not long ago it felt as if they were attending this same field trip but as eighth graders. Now, they are planning to go as sophomores. With high school going by in a flash, Okawville is trying to prepare its students for the outside world. During this day, the students will attend many presentations hosted by the college’s professors or the employers themselves. Their lunch is provided for them by the college with a choice of turkey, ham, or vegetable sandwich. The students had to pay two dollars to be able to attend. This money will go towards the cost of food and transportation. The students were pulled into a meeting hosted by guidance counselor, Mrs. Schleifer. In this meeting, they were given a sheet with a list of all the presentations and workshops they could attend. The sophomores had to rank 6 presentations that they wanted to see, with one being the presentation they wanted to see the most, and 3 workshops they wanted to attend as well. What they choose will help decide what sessions each individual will get to attend during the field trip. The chance to go to career day isn’t held only in Okawville; colleges have opened this opportunity for many schools around Southern Illinois. This opportunity is good for students because it expands their knowledge and helps them learn about different jobs they wouldn’t usually get the opportunity to learn about.
