On Halloween Night, the Okawville Student Council is trick or treating for canned goods! Every year, members of the Student Council collect canned goods from houses in the community to donate to the Addieville food pantry and local families. Students travel to Okawville, Addieville, Venedy, and St. Libory to “trick or treat” for canned items. Student Council president, Camryn Wiedwilt, organizes groups of students based on where they live to trick or treat. Members who cannot drive are paired with members who can to ensure everyone can participate. If you would like to donate to local families and the Addieville Food Pantry, place a bag of canned goods by your front door, or students can go up to your door and ask if you would like to donate a few items if your lights are on. Every donation makes a difference!
Student Council has been doing this food drive for more than 20 years! This started when Mrs. Schleifer, the former Student Council Advisor, went to a district convention, heard about “Trick or Treating for Canned Goods” from other schools, and thought it was a good idea. Mrs. Schleifer was always looking for a service project for the Student Council to do that would benefit the families in our community, and she thought Trick or Treating for Canned Goods was perfect. In the past, these collected canned goods were all donated to the Addieville Food Pantry, but now the Student Council has started working with the Lions Club, the school keeps a lot of the canned goods to make boxes of food for families in need. However, they still donate some to the Addieville Food Pantry.
Overall, Trick or Treating for Canned Goods has been extremely successful in the past. Members can collect enough cans to make up 20 boxes of food for Thanksgiving and 20 boxes for Christmas. The Lions Club and Student Council appreciate every donation they receive and hope to see a good outcome again this year!
