The Special Olympics program is for people with intellectual disabilities who want to play a sport. This program shows people with disabilities their full athletic potential, builds self-confidence and allows people to stay in physical shape. It also allows families and friends to support and communicate with other families or athletes with intellectual disabilities.
On November 3, 2024, National Honor Society and Student Leadership Team members went to St. Clair Bowling Alley to volunteer in the Special Olympics. Students left Okawville at 7:30 in the morning and returned around 4:00 in the afternoon. They spent all day monitoring lanes for the Special Olympics Bowling Sectional.
Students volunteer at this event every year, and each one of them always says that it is a worthwhile experience that they enjoy. On January 5, 2025, Okawville High School is hosting its annual Special Olympics Basketball tournament. There, students volunteer as refs, scorekeepers, and concession stand workers.
