On Friday, November 8th, OHS hosted its annual Veterans Day Assembly to honor our local veterans. Students of all ages participated in this assembly. It began with the Junior High and High School band playing Friends of Freedom and Thunderer, followed by Aubrey Krieger welcoming everyone. Next, two third graders, Penny Lintker and Jace Rossel, spoke about the history of the Star Spangled Banner. Then Junior High and High School choirs sang The Star Spangled Banner. After that, three second graders, Caraleigh Krieger, Aria Rettinger, and Benson Elliott, discussed what Veterans Day is for. Next the flags for each military branch were brought out by military family students Gabe Charles, Aubrey Charles, Micheal Todd, Skyler Wilfong, Brendan Krieger, and Aubrey Krieger. OGS K-6 and Immanuel Lutheran School sang the Armed Forces Song while the flags were carried out. After that, Fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students, Arlo Crabtree, Chase Hugens, Annie Lintker, Wyatt Nobe, Jammielynn Young, and Korrynn Schutte read about each branch. Next, the Junior High and High School chorus sang God Bless America. This was followed by first graders Jaxson Borrenpohl, Paul Janowski, and Elsi Hundelt reading their poems about Veterans Day. Then, guest speaker Eric Charles spoke about his military experience. After, the local Scouts Aiden Parker and Petra Galliano folded the flag while Mr. Rakers said what each fold meant. Mr. Rakers held silence in honor of passed veterans and Mr. Recker played Taps. Then, Payton Harris read her Patriots Pen essay and James D’Entrement read his Voice of Democracy essay. The final event was the junior high and high school choirs singing Song for the Unsung Hero while the kindergarten class held “Happy Veteran’s Day” signs. While people walked out, the high school band played Patriotic Parade Sequence.
