This week at Okawville High School students were given rewards as incentives to do the right thing and make smart choices. The rewards are funded by the Student Leadership Team, who used their money from working concessions. Each quarter the group gets together and decides what the rewards will be. The prizes were handed out at lunch. Blow pops for no discipline referrals, lunch detentions, detentions, or suspensions. Chips or cookies were handed out for no F’s on report cards or final exams. Then a can of Ski or Gatorade for less than two absences and a Frozen Ski for less than one. I asked Mrs. Schleifer if she thought the prizes worked in motivating students to be better. She said, “Somewhat, there are definitely students who work for prizes. However, most are just doing the right thing, and it’s nice to get recognized for making good choices.”
