Last Tuesday, January 28, Coach David Luechtefeld was honored at the boys’ basketball game. He played for the Rockets in 1954-1958. He earned 2,155 career points as a player, placing him 96th in IHSA history and second in OHS history. He has the OHS record for the amount of points during a game at 64 points. After high school, he taught history and government for 32 years, was athletic director for 33 years, and coached baseball and basketball for 38 total years. Luechtefeld coached baseball for 28 years and won 506 games. Additionally, he is in the Illinois Baseball Hall of Fame. As a basketball coach, he won 738 games. Luechtefeld is ranked 12th for wins at one school with a record of 738-348, and he is 17th on the IHSA wins list. While in the two classes system, his 1980 team placed third in the Class A state tournament and his 1987 team placed second in the Class A State Tournament. He is in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, Illinois Basketball Players Hall of Fame, St. Louis University Hall of Fame, Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, and St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. Outside of Education and Sports, he served as a 58th district Illinois State Senator from 1995 to 2017. He served as Assistant Minority Leader for 14 years and Deputy Minority Leader for one year. The Rockets and Mr. Charlie Meier presented Coach Luechtefeld with a resolution to him for this special occasion. Thank you Coach Luechtefeld for all you’ve done!
