The Okawville FFA had an event this past week that the chapter did very well on. The event was called Food Science. Food Science is a group project where the groups have to taste different foods and smell different kinds of aromas without being able to see them. They then have to name the food and scent. Varsity got 5th place overall and 4th within section 22. Their team consisted of Abby Brennfleck with a score of 101, Lily Helbig with a score of 104, Kate Borrenpohl with a score of 125, and Izzy Howard with a score of 129. They also had a JV team that consisted of 3 people: Lane Borrenpohl with a score of 69, Andrew Bunch with a score of 82, and Clayton Hermans with a score of 110. They ended up getting 5th in Section 22.
Even though FFA has had a pretty slow week, the Ag classes have been busy. Intro to Ag is being introduced to the FFA side of things, where they learn about the three circles of Ag. The three circle topics are FFA (Future Farmers of America), SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience), and Classroom (how the classroom connects to the rest of them). The horticulture class started by learning how different potting mixes affect the plants. They have now moved on to learning more about hydroponics. As well, Ag Science is learning about soil chemistry and fertility. Another class, Ag Construction and Mechanics, is keeping busy and learning how to make certain things. Something Ag Construction is building is sawhorses. They do this by using the power tools they learned to construct one. Something Mechanics is doing is breaking down the parts of a small engine. Finally, their business is exploring the way to survey and the materials used to do it.
