On Wednesday, November 5th, the Okawville High School Anatomy and Physiology class watched an open-heart surgery that was being done in Chicago. The open heart surgery was done on a 68-year-old male; they later learned the male was cutting grass in his yard when he noticed he was having breathing problems, so he went to the doctor. After he had gone through many tests and multiple doctor visits, he needed to have multiple bypasses done. The students had the opportunity to observe the surgery for 2 hours, but the procedure lasted approximately 3 hours for the patient. This opportunity helped the students visualize what occurs during a surgery. They also got to see all the people in the operating room who have an important role in the surgery process. This was a very neat opportunity for the students, and they all enjoyed it.
